Background

In September 2010, the Habaş Group filed for environmental permits to build a 600-MW coal-fired power plant on the Mediterranean coast in İzmir province.[1] As of 2013, the preliminary review had been completed, and the project was in the public hearing phase of the permitting process.[2]

In October 2013, a public meeting held in Aliağa as part of the permitting process was met with angry protests of local residents.[3]

In August 2014 it was reported the plant would be fuelled by natural gas, not coal.[4]
