Background
The 122 MW power station consists of one 64 MW and one 58 MW unit, commissioned in 1995 and 2006, respectively. The plant is co-fired with coal and biomass.[5]
As of April 2021, Albioma – which provides approximately 46% of the island's electricity – was planning to switch the power station to 100% biomass by 2024. The island's power stations burn both coal and bagasse, with coal still representing approximately 70% of energy production.[6][7]
As of July 2022, the plant was still slated for a 100% biomass transition over the next several years. In addition, the plant's life was extended until 2044.[8]
Philippe Boyer, Plant Manager at Albioma Le Gol, has indicated that conversion of the Le Gol plant from coal to biomass could be completed as early as the end of 2023.[9]
