Background

In November 2020, Pakistan and Russia signed a revised agreement to build the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline, also known as Karachi-Lahore Gas Pipeline, and formerly known as the North-South Gas Pipeline. Resources, a subsidiary of the Russian company Rostec, was originally chosen to build the pipeline in 2015.[1]

As of January 2021, construction of the project was scheduled to start in July 2021, according to a Pakistan government official, and the pipeline is intended to allow Pakistan to operate more liquefied natural gas terminals. Pakistan's gas distribution companies Sui Southern Gas Co. and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd., which have started acquiring land for the pipeline, are expected to be a part of the project, and a Russian consortium is expected to lead the construction.[5]

In July 2021, the governments of Pakistan and Russia signed a preliminary agreement for the pipeline's construction, and announced that Pakistan’s state-owned gas companies will hold 74% of the shares while the Russian companies would own 26% shares in the project. [6][7]

As per February 2023 media reports, Pakistan was considering shifting the ‘starting point’ of the Russia’s Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline from Karachi to Gwadar.[7]
