Background on Mine

The Katkona Underground Coal Mine has a designed capacity of 0.36 MTPA on a mining lease area of 1130.929 ha. It is operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited.

The project received its environment clearance for a capacity expansion from 0.225 MTPA to 0.36 MTPA on 20 June 2006.[3]

However, the EC lapsed and SECL had to apply for the revalidation of the environment clearance granted to the project on 20 June 2006. In 40th EAC (thermal and coal mining projects), MoEF&CC India, meeting held on 26 October 2018, the company was asked to conduct EIA/EMP study and public hearing once again.[4]

Meanwhile, the Katkona 3&4 exhausted its capacity and hence has been closed.[5] The mine can now start only after regrant of the EC from the MoEF&CC India.
