Background

The Uchastok Koksovy (Kiselyovsk) coal mine (Участок Коксовый) is a surface mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.

(Uchastok" means "site," and "Koksovy" means "coke") The mine is operated by Uchastok Koksovy LLC, its ultimate parent is KOKS PJSC. KOKS Group also includes the Management Company Industrial Metallurgical Holding (IMH), which is often referred to as the owner of Uchastok Koksovy.

The mine's capacity is 1 Mtpa. The mine is conducting re-cultivation of the land which was disturbed by underground mining works, while mining coal using the surface method. As of September 2023, according to the company, the reclamation commitments have been fulfilled: over 200 hectares of industrial landscape have been transformed into tree and grass areas.

The history of the Koksovy site began in 2002. Initially, mining work was considered a secondary activity of the enterprise, and the main task was to eliminate workings of the closed Vakhrusheva and Surtaikha mines that were dangerous in terms of endogenous fires, as well as to restore lands disturbed as a result of industrial activities. The first license agreement provided for the production of only 600 thousand tonnes of coal per year.In 2012, specialists developed a project that made it possible to increase coal production to 850 thousand tonnes, and in 2014 an additional license was received to develop the Koksovy Gluboky section. As of today (2023), the mine's production is about 1.3 million tonnes per year. This is comparable to another source that reported production in the first half of 2022 at 660 thousand tonnes of coal.

In 2021, the site was supposed to cease to exist, however, when it became clear that the coal mined here as a by-product has unique properties, more geological studies were conducted and it was found that the balance reserves would last for many years to come. The Industrial and Metallurgical Holding has new prospects for increasing the production of coking coal with the necessary chemical and physical characteristics: it can be used to produce coke with high hot strength, which is one of the key indicators that determines the quality of the finished product. In May 2023, a new technical project was developed: it was decided to review the stability angles of the quarry without compromising safe operation and to find additional resources. The increase in reserves was another 8 million tonnes, which guarantees stable operation of the site for many years with the possibility of increasing production volumes,” said Vladimir Perekrestov, managing director of Uchastok Koksovy LLC.
