Navin Kunada Coal Mine

The Navin Kunada Opencast Coal Mine was a 2 million tonnes per anum (MTPA) project located in village Navin Kunada, Tehsil Bhadravati, District Chandrapur, Maharashtra State, India.[1] It was owned and operated by Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India.[1]

As of 2020, the mine has permanently closed.[2]

Background

The Navin Kanada opencast coal mine was accorded Environment Clearance for expansion in the coal production capacity from 0.80 MTPA to 2.0 MTPA and lease area from 153 hectares (ha) to 258.45 ha on 21st March 2007.[1]

A copy of the six monthly compliance report of conditions of Environment Clearance is uploaded on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Government of India's website for Navin Kunada Opencast Coal Mine Expansion Project from April 2019 to September 2019.[3]

Closure

At some time during the late 2010s, Navin Kunada Mine was mothballed. It then appears to have closed sometime between 2019 and 2020 due to the exhaustion of its reserves.[2]
