The New Denmark coal mine is an underground coal mine in the Highveld coalfields, 30 kilometers north of Standerton, in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the New Denmark coal mine in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.
Background
The New Denmark Colliery was commissioned in 1982.[1]
In 2018, Anglo American sold New Denmark to Seriti Resources, the current owners.[2]
The mine, which operates at a depth of up to 200 meters, is one of the deepest coal mining operations in South Africa. It includes three main operational areas: Central Shaft, Okhozini Shaft, and North Shaft.[3] It is a mechanized mine, with the bulk of production being sourced from one extraction unit using longwall mining methods.[1] The coal mined at the New Denmark Colliery is transported via conveyors from the Central and North shafts to the coal stockyard located at Eskom’s Tutuka Power Station.[3]
New Denmark employs over 850 permanent employees and 600 contractors, and supplies roughly 3 million tonnes per annum of thermal coal to Eskom’s Tutuka Power Station, according to Seriti Resources. The mine has sufficient current and additional coal resources to supply the power station until 2039.[1]
