Background on Mine

The Niljai Opencast Coal Mine is a 3.5 million tonne-per-annum mine owned by Western Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited. The mine is located south of Ukni Opencast Mine and north of Bellora Coal Mine. The main consumers of the mine are thermal plants of MAHAGENCO.

The Environment Clearance from Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) for expansion from production capacity from 2.60 MTPA to 3.5 MTPA to Niljai Opencast Coal Mine Expansion project was granted on 10th February 2009. [1]

Later in 2015 the Environment from Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) Clearance for expansion in Mine Lease area from 1346.63 ha to 1761.22 ha at the existing production capacity of 3.5 MTPA at Niljai Opencast Coal Mine project was granted. The clearance was granted by MoEF&CC on 12th October 2015. [2]
