Background

A memorandum of understanding between Bangladesh Power Division and Siemens to build the plant was signed in November 2017.[4]

Initially expected to start running in 2020, construction has slowed down enough that a steering group was formed with representatives from the NWPGCL and Siemens to speed up the project. In addition, a land-based liquefied natural gas terminal was planned to be built to supply fuel for the power plant.[4]

In 2022, the government announced it was taking a step back from project due to high LNG costs. However, NWPGCL said a 1200-MW power plant can be built at the initial stage under its own management.[5][6]
