The Port of Cartagena is on the northern shores of Cartagena Bay, Colombia. It is Colombia's largest port in terms of export value and second only to the Port of Ciénaga in terms of export volume.[1] The port has reportedly been used for coal exports in the past, and there has been talk of developing the port to handle future exports of Colombian coal from Norte de Santander department. However, government reports indicate that it has not been used for coal exports in recent years.

Official reports from Colombia's Superintendency of Ports and Transport show that no coal exports passed through the Port of Cartagena in 2015 or 2016[2][3][4], and a MundoMaritimo report from January 2018 makes no mention of coal among the Port of Cartagena's exports in 2017 (primary exports listed were polypropylene, PVC, fertilizers, ferronickel, automobiles, chemical and petrochemical products, cement and other construction materials, tuna, fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, and coffee).[1]
According to some previous reports, the Port of Cartagena once handled coal exports[5], including exports for InterAmerican Coal, a Colombian supplier to the global market.[6] However, as of 2018 InterAmerican Coal's website only shows one Colombian port handling its coal exports, the inland river port of Puerto Capulco in Gamarra.[7]
In September 2015, representatives from Colombia's Ministry of Transport met with officials from several Colombian ports, including the Port of Cartagena, to assess the possibility of exporting coal mined in Norte de Santander department through Colombian ports. The meeting was precipitated by the recent closure of the Colombia-Venezuela border, which has disrupted the traditional export of Colombian coal through Venezuelan ports.[8]
As of July 2021 there is no indication that the port is continuing to consider coal exports.
