Sterling Steel was originally the Northwestern Steel & Wire plant, which began operations in 1936 under Northwestern Steel & Wire Co and ceased operations in 2001 when the company went bankrupt. The plant was purchased by Leggett & Platt in 2002 and renovated to restart operations in 2003.[1]

Sterling Steel recycles nearly 600,000 tonnes of steel scrap annually.[2] The scrap is sourced from vehicles, buildings, and appliances that are turned into wire rod coils.[3]
