Background on Project
Provinces like Tekirdağ, Kırklareli and Edirne in Trakya region of Turkey, have large agriculture and forest lands that woudl be impact by planned coal power plants such as Eren-1, Çerkezköy or Vize. Lignite reserves were previously explored in Vize basin in 2002,[1] while the oldest geological reconnaissance for Trakya (Trace) region dates back to 1954,[2] and the use of lignite coal has been a priority under Turkey's energy strategy since 2009.[3]
In October 2016 Vize plant was announced by TKI (Turkish Coal Enterprise), a state-owned agency, to be built in Vize town of Tekirdağ by the revision of upper-scale spatial plan.[4] By the revision, plant area was declared "energy generation area";[4] the revised plan was also announcing Çerkezköy power station. In December 2016, the local community, city council and also Vize municipality opposed the spatial plan revision by petitions and protests, it is reported that thousands of signatures were collected.[5]
As of December 2019, the operator has not started either the environmental permitting[6] or generation license[7] processes. However, the revised spatial plan has not changed further and it still allows the plant.[8] On the other hand, TKI continues analysing the coal in the region[9] and in 2018 TKI started the environmental permit process to extract lignite coal from Vize town, Topçuköy, which is 12 km from the plant area.[10][11]
Environmental Impact
Greenpeace's report in 2018 estimates that Vize coal power plant would cause 182 premature deaths annually due to the exposure to PM2.5 and NO2 air pollutants.[12] Vize city is a member of Cittaslow.[13]
