Background

The Chertinskaya-Koksovaya Coal Mine (шахта Чертинская-Коксовая) is an operating underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Chertinskaya-Koksovaya coal mine is an underground coal mine. It is operated and owned by MMK-Ugol LLC, which is a subsidiary of Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works.[9] The other mine owned by the company is Kostromovskaya coal mine.

In the first half of 2022, the Chertinskaya-Koksovaya produced 1.13 million tonnes.[10]

MMK-Ugol also owns the Belovskaya coal washing plant that produces coal concentrate received from the Chertinskaya-Koksovaya and Kostromovskaya coal mine. Most of the coal concentrate is used in MMK's steel production. The two mines cover about 40% of the Group's coking coal needs.[11]

In September 2020, two miners died following a collapse.[12]

In March 2022, the mine temporarily shut down because of hazardous conditions.[13]

In August 2023 it was reported that the mine is preparing to launch a new seam No 6 with unmanned mining. Glavgosekspertiza issued a positive opinion on the project, which provides for the construction of a mechanised cleaning complex with unmanned coal excavation. Coal production at the new seam is planned for the end of 2025, with the annual coal production as a whole for the mine expected to be from 1.8 to 2.2 million tonnes.[14] Equipment is to come from China.[15]
