Background

American LNG's Hialeah terminal is an approved LNG export terminal in the US, and has submitted contracts for long-term export of LNG to the US Department of Energy.

In August of 2015, the US Department of Energy authorized American LNG Marketing to export LNG from the Hialeah Terminal, including to countries which do not have a Free Trade Agreement with the United States. Exports will be shipped via ISO LNG containers. American LNG began production in February of 2016 and is currently operational.

Ownership

The Hialeah LNG facility has changed hands and names several times since it began operations in 2016 as American LNG Marketing LLC (a Fortress Investment Group subsidiary), earning distinction as the first LNG exporter from the continental United States. The plant later came under New Fortress Energy, founded by Fortress co-founder Wes Edens, and was operated for a time under the name Miami LNG. In November 2024, New Fortress Energy sold the Miami LNG business to Pennybacker Capital Management, a private investment firm, for an undisclosed amount. Pennybacker rebranded the company as Sawgrass LNG & Power in April 2025, appointing Daniel McLaughlin as President, and the company has since expanded its focus beyond LNG supply into gas-to-power solutions, marine bunkering, and aerospace fueling. Despite the string of ownership and name changes, Sawgrass continues to operate the same Miami-based liquefaction facility — producing over 100,000 gallons of LNG per day with 270,000 gallons of onsite storage — and marked its 10-year anniversary in February 2026 by claiming the original 2016 export milestone as part of its own history.
