Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) is a major Indian aluminum company which operates an existing aluminum smelter with another under construction in Chhattisgarh, two bauxite mines and two coal-fired power stations.[1] [2] [3]

BALCO was a government-owned company until 2001 when 51% was sold to Sterlite Industries. The government of Indian retains a 49% stake in the project.[4]

Coal-fired power stations

BALCO operates two captive coal-fired power stations. These are a 270 megawatt (MW) power station at Jamnipali, Korba, Chhattisgarh. This plant sources its coal from the Gevra & Kusmunda mines of South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India. The second power station is a 540MW at the same location and also sourcing its coal from the Gevra & Kusmunda mines.[3]

Proposed new coal-fired power station

BALCO is proposing to build a new 325,000 tonne per annum aluminum smelter within the existing Korba Aluminium Complex. As a part of the expansion, BALCO is building a new 1,200 MW coal-fired power station.[5]
