Background

In March 2023, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov approved a proposal to build the second combined-cycle gas power plant in the country on the territory of the Balkan velayat with the capacity of 1574 MW (The first combined cycle power plant in Turkmenistan with the annual capacity of 1,574 MW was built in the Mary region and put into operation in September 2018).  The construction of the power station was included in the Investment Program of Turkmenistan for 2023 and is aimed at meeting the country's growing needs for electricity and the constantly rising demand for it from importing states.[5]

A tender for construction of the power station was announced in March 2023 with the submission deadline of May 10, 2023.[6] As of March 2024, the construction is in progress. The project is implemented by Turkish Çalik Enerji.[7]
