Background
In December 2022, London-based oil and gas firm Perenco received technical approval from the Gabonese authorities for the construction of an LNG export terminal at Cap Lopez, Gabon.[4]
In February 2023, Perenco announced a final investment decision (FID) on the project. The facility will have a capacity of 0.7 mtpa LNG and 0.2 mtpa liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The project will expand on the existing Cap Lopez Oil Export Terminal operated by Perenco.[1] Construction is expected to take 3 years, with the project coming online in 2026.[1][4]
Perenco had bought the Cap Lopez Terminal from TotalEnergies in 2021 for $350 million but was forced to suspend operations in April 2022 following a 300,000 barrel oil spill at the terminal.[4]
In May 2024, a representative of Perenco said that construction was expected to begin within the coming weeks, and that the design was "a unique concept, where we have a liquefaction barge that will be built and all modules sent to the FSU which will be moored alongside the FLNG."[5]
In September 2024, Dixstone was awarded the contract to construct, procure, and integrate the LNG project.[6]
In November 2024, the Bran6 barge began conversions in the UAE the become the project's liquefaction barge.[7]
In April 2025, Perenco announced it had bought the LNG carrier LNG Bayelsa from Nigeria's Bonny Gas Transport for conversion into the FSU LNG Cap Lopez.[7]
