Cepheus is a gas field in development in the North Sea, off the coast of the United Kingdom.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the field in the North Sea, approximately 150 km northeast of Aberdeen, United Kingdom.[1][2]
Background
Cepheus was discovered in 2014 by GdF Suez (34.48%) and partners Centrica North (48.28%) Sea Gas and Bayerngas E&P (17.24%) as a part of the P1731 license.[3] As of 2022, that license is owned by Neptune Energy (38.75%, Operator) and Spirit Energy (61.25%).[4] Neptune’s major shareholders are China Investment Corporation, The Carlyle Group and CVC Capital Partners.[5] Spirit Energy is a joint venture of Centrica, Stadtwerke München GmbH and Bayerngas GmbH.[6]
According to Uplift analysis published by Carbon Brief, Cepheus is one of the North Sea oil and gas projects that could be approved between 2022 and 2025 (Dunne 2022). As of 2014, Cepheus was expected to be developed as a tie-in to the nearby Cygnus Oil and Gas Field (United Kingdom).[7]
