Background

Chongqing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. is publicly-listed on both the Shanghai Stock Exchange (601005 SH) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (01053 HK).

On May 9th 2020, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment released feedback from the Central Fourth Ecological and Environmental Protection Inspection Team to Chongqing Municipality. According to the report, Chongqing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., illegally changed the designated location for solid waste storage without proper environmental assessment. They stored approximately 300,000 tons of steel slag mixed with other solid wastes on a hillside less than 800 meters from the Yangtze River shoreline. Moreover, they failed to implement measures to prevent leaching and seepage, leading to excessive leachate being discharged directly into the Yangtze River. [1]
