Background

The first two units of the Gansu 803 power station started operation in 1966 and 1968, each had a size of 35 MW. In 1970, 25 MW unit 3 went online, followed by 50 MW unit 4 in 2005. All units retired by 2017. The power station extended its capacity with two 300 MW units between 2016 and 2017. The power station is owned by Huaneng Group.

Description of Expansion

Gansu plans two additional coal-fired CHP units at this plant, units 5-6, with a total planned capacity of 600 MW.[1]

The new units were permitted by NDRC in November 2011, and started construction in 2012, aiming operation in 2014.[2]But due to unknown reason, it has been stopped for 3 years. Only in April 2015, the construction restarted.[3] [3] Unit 1 began operating in December 2016,[4] and unit 2 in February 2017.[5] The older units were fully retired in May 2017. The capacity of Datang 803 remains 660MW.[6]

Ownership

In May 2020, State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) began a pilot project which is allowing each of the five Central SOEs, central government-owned power giants presenting only in one province or autonomous region in 5 northwest provinces and autonomous regions. It is an effort by SASAC to improve the financial performance of the coal power companies in these 5 provinces and Autonomous regions. According to SASAC's arrangement, China Huaneng presents in Gansu. China Huadian leads Xinjiang. China Datang is in Shaanxi except those power companies belonging to China Energy Group. SPIC is in Qinghai. China Energy Group leads Ningxia. [7][8] By the end of 2020, 10 coal power stations in Gansu have completed the transition. [9][10]

Guodian Yuzhong Power Station transferred its ownership to China Huaneng in Februry 2021.[11]
