Background

Huainan Tianjia'an power station was founded in October 1941. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the plant went through several expansions. The first phase of eight units has been retired. Phase II consisted of units 1-4 of 120 to 137.5 MW each, which were commissioned in 1972 to 1977 and retired in 2007. Units 5-6 of 320 MW each were commissioned in 1996 and 2005.[1]

In 2008, units 5-6 converted to CHP units, and started to supply heating in the winter to Huainan City.[2]

Proposed expansion

In 2012 the company proposed two new 1,000 MW units.[3] Feasibility reports were completed in January 2013.[4]

In February 2016 the Anhui government said it was still debating environmental clearance for the the project, given the changing national economy and slowdown in demand for coal power.[5]

There were no further developments on the plan until March 2020, when the project was listed as a priority project for Anhui province, as part of a UHV power hub in the Yangtze River Delta.[6]

There were no known updates on the project between 2020 and December 2022, so the project was presumed shelved.

Company ownership

In 1999 Anhui Electric Power Co. was established, and in 2002 Tianjia'an Power Station became one of its branches.
