Background

The Tuoketuo Power Station is the second largest coal-fired power station in the world. The plant is owned by the Tuoketuo Power Company.[1]

The coal-based power station consists of eight 600MW generating units commissioned between 2003 and 2006. All of the generated power is delivered to Beijing.[2]

Two additional 300 MW units brought into production in 2011.[2] The two units became captive power plant for Inner Mongolia Datang International Renewable Resources Development Co., Ltd in 2020[3] For additional details, see [[Hohhot Aluminum power station ]].

Description of Expansion

Datang is planning to build two additional coal-fired units at this plant, with a total planned capacity of 1,320 MW. The project was permitted for construction in 2014.[4]

In 2015 the new units were under construction and planned for operation in 2017.[5]

The new units were commissioned in 2017, making the Datang Tuoketuo power station the largest coal plant in the world at 6,720 MW.[6]

Ownership

The Tuoketuo Power Company is owned by three separate companies:[1]

Fuel supply

The power plant exploits coal from the Junggar Coalfield approximately 50 km (31 mi) away, and meets its water requirements by pumping its needs from the Yellow River, located 12 km (7 mi) away.[1]
