Background

The field was discovered in January 2019 by CNOOC Petroleum Europe Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNOOC Limited.[10][11][12] According to Rystad Energy, "a material discovery of this size has not been seen in UK waters since Culzean was drilled in 2008".[13] Initial estimates placed recoverable reserves from the field at around 250 million boe.[14]

In April 2021, Glengorm South appraisal well, the first appraisal well on the Glengorm gas field, found “no commercial hydrocarbons”.[15][16] At the time, CNOOC and Energean stressed that the existing Glengorm North discovery and the Glengorm Central appraisal well, which will be drilled next, were considered to be independent of Glengorm South.[15] In December 2021, CNOOC announced that the second appraisal well (22/21c-14) yielded “no commercial hydrocarbons” either.[17] It is reported that this field may still be commercial as a tie-back, for instance to TotalEnergies’ Elgin-Franklin facilities.[17]

As a result of the appraisals, Westwood Global downgraded the volumes potentially to be recovered from Glengorm to be maximum 60 MMboe.[18]

Production was originally expected to begin in 2024.[19] As of April 2022, production was expected to start in 2025, was forecast to peak in 2029, and was predicted to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2054.[20]

Opposition

While the original discovery of the field was hailed as significant by industry, the project faced opposition from environmental groups who called it a “disgrace” given its potential to contribute to climate change.[21]

Ownership

The field is operated by CNOOC Petroleum Europe Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNOOC Limited.[13][11] CNOOC holds a 50% interest in the project, with TotalEnergies and Energean each holding 25% interest.[13][20][22][16] Originally, Edison Exploration & Production held a 25% stake in the field but was acquired by Energean in December 2020 along with its assets in Glengorm.[16]
