Background

In January 2011 it was reported that BGR Energy Systems Limited will be setting up a 1320 MW coal plant in the Bhapur block, with plans for it to go into commercial production by 2015. The plant will sit on 928.25 acres of land in Chakradhara Prasad and Golapokhari panchayats, with an investment of 6,300 crore. It will draw water from the Mahanadi river and coal from Talcher by rail.[1]

As of August 2015 the project has yet to receive environmental permits, and was likely abandoned.

In May 2017 Business Standard reported that BGR Energy had written to the state government with an intent to shelve the project. According to a state official: "Without coal blocks or firm linkages, thermal power producers are finding it tough to commission their projects. Also, the scenario is shifting in favour of renewable power with tariffs getting more competitive."[2]
