Background

The two existing coal-fired units of Huiliuhe power station, totaling 100 MW, were brought online in 1993. The plant's first two units have been retired. The plant is owned by China Huaneng.[3]

Description of Expansion

Huaneng is seeking environmental clearance to expand the power station by two units, units 5 and 6, of 200 MW each.[4]

The units were permitted in 2014.[5][6]

Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity

In January 2017 China's National Energy Administration suspended over 100 planned and under-construction coal power projects with a total capacity of over 100GW in 13 provinces, including Huaneng Yakeshi Huiliuhe. It is unclear when or if the projects will be revived.[7]

For details, see China's 2016 Restrictions on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity.

Project revived

In September 2018, units 5 and 6 changed to a 350MW + 50MW project.[8] The units were again permitted for construction in April 2020.[9] Construction began in August 2020.[10]

In May 2022, the project was expected to operate by April 2023.[11]
