Background

Approved in 2016, the Jafrabad FSRU will consist of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Jafrabad, Gujarat. The 5 mtpa capacity is planned to be commissioned in 2019 and a future FSRU will expand the terminal to 10 mtpa.[4] Construction is presumed to have begun at the end of 2016 with the approval of the terminal.

The proposal was previously planned for the city of Pipavav, and dates back to 2008.[5]

In September 2020, the 180,000 m3 FSRU Vasant 1 was completed at Korea’s Hyundai shipyard and will be provided by MOL for the 5 MTPA LNG terminal at Jafrabad port in Gujarat. Besides the FSRU, the project, led by Swan Energy Ltd., will also include an FSU.[6]

In November 2020, developers submitting an application to push back construction completion by another year.[1]

In June 2022, Swan Energy said that it expected to commission the FSRU this year.[2]

The first phase of the project, with the 5 mtpa FSRU Vasant 1 and a floating storage unit (FSU), was supposed to be commissioned in 2022, but due to project delays, the FSRU was instead chartered by Botas for one year to serve an import terminal in Türkiye.[3]
