The Kangala Colliery is an opencast coal mine complex owned and operated by TerraCom Limited, in Delmas, Victor Khanye, Nkangala, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[1]

The mine consists of two properties: the Wolvenfontein and Middelbult pits.

Kangala officially reached the end of its resource life in January 2021, however, a proposed extension of the mine — the Eloff coal project, operated by Eloff Mining Company, a joint venture of Ndalamo Resources and TerraCom — is expected to produce 2.4 million tonnes per annum. Kangala has been placed into care and maintenance until the Eloff project begins operation.

Background

Kangala Colliery was previously owned by Universal Coal Plc (Universal). However, in June 2020, TerraCom acquired 100% of Universal.

The Kangala colliery officially reached the end of its resource life in January 2021.[2]

Expansion

In an effort to extend the life of the Kangala complex, the Eloff project was announced. Located adjacent to the Kangala pit, the project allows for a low-cost expansion of the life-of-mine (LOM) at Kangala, as well as the potential for additional standalone extensions within the broader project area. The estimated LOM of Eloff is 20 years.[3]

While the mining right and environmental approval for Eloff was granted in December 2018, the project still awaits the finalization of the domestic offtake agreement with Eskom before recommencing development and production from the current Kangala pit into the Eloff resource.[4][2] As a result of this ongoing delay, the Kangala colliery was placed into care and maintenance as of July 2021 so as to minimize costs.[2]
