Background

The project involves the construction of a 1,390MW (225MWx4 and 250MWx2) power plant and an LNG receiving terminal including a floating storage regasification unit (FSRU), a powerhouse, a substation and storage tanks, the laying of transmission lines and pipe lines, and the installation of generators, transformers, safety and security systems. The project will be implemented in phases. Construction work on the first phase had been expected to commence in the first quarter of 2019 and take 36 months to complete; the entire project is expected to take 42 months to complete.

In May 2021, it was reported by Reuters that a US$2.5 billion LNG project had been approved for new investment by Myanmar's military rulers as part of a package of 15 new projects worth nearly US$2.8 billion overall. While the Myanmar authorities did not specifically name the LNG project in question, media reports identify it as the Mee Laung Gyaing FSRU LNG Terminal, expected to be completed in 2023, with 35% of the power produced to be distributed to the Ayeyarwady Region, and the rest going to Yangon via the national grid.
