Background
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin approved construction of the Oak Creek CT Expansion power station in Milwaukee County in May 2025. The cost of the project is over USD 1.2 billion. The new gas plant would essentially replace aging coal units at the South Oak Creek power station. Two of those units came offline in 2024, and the remaining two are scheduled to shut down in 2025. We Energies plans to begin construction in 2025. The new project is part of We Energies’ more than USD 2 billion plan to invest in gas infrastructure to respond to expected increases in energy demand in southeast Wisconsin, driven by the development of power-hungry data centers and industrial growth. (We Energies is the trade name of Wisconsin Electric Power Company and Wisconsin Gas LLC, two utility subsidiaries of WEC Energy Group.) Environmental groups, however, decried the commission for approving the plant, saying it locks in decades more of reliance on fossil fuels. [7]
This brand new 1100 MW gas plant is to be located directly west of the existing Oak Creek Power Plant (OCPP) and Elm Road Generating Station (ERGS) on land owned by Wisconsin Electric in the City of Oak Creek, Wisconsin. The generating facility will consist of five new GE 7FA.05 combustion turbine generators with an approximate output of 220 MW each.[8] While these five units are being built from scratch, they will make use of some pre-existing infrastructure associated with the South Oak Creek coal-fired power station.[9]
