Background

In December 2013, Utico Middle East signed a memorandum of understanding with the Namibia government for construction of a US$300 million coal-fired power plant in the Okakarara Governorate. The project involved the initial construction of a 150 MW facility, followed by expansion to increase production to 300 MW.

The agreement stated the Namibian government would provide the coal to fuel the plant for Utico Middle East, with all power generated in the plant to be sold to Namibia Power Corporation (NAM Power), the government-run utilities company. In addition to the development of the power plant, Utico would also set up a transmission network to distribute the power across the country.

With no developments on the project since its 2013 announcement, it appears to be abandoned.
