Background on gas plant
Paguthan Combined Cycle Power Plant is located in Bharuch district, Gujarat. The gas plant is owned by CLP India Private Limited, a subsidiary of China Light & Power (CLP Group).[1] The plant was originally owned by Gujarat Paguthan Energy Corporation, which was acquired by CLP India in 2002.[2]
The gas has an installed capacity of 655 MW. All units became operational in 1998. It comprises the following units:[3]
- Three units of gas turbine, each of 138 MW capacity.
- One unit of steam turbine of 241 MW capacity.
Proposed coal plant
In January 2015 CLP Group said it planned to add about 2000 MW of coal-based power generation capacity to its existing gas-based plant, which was nearing the end of its power purchase agreement. The estimated cost is US$2 billion. It would be fueled by imported coal.[4]
The company applied for a terms of reference (ToR) for the 2,000 MW plant in June 2015.[5] ToR was granted on Feb 17, 2016.[6]
As of June 2020 the project has not received environmental clearance, and plans appear cancelled.
