Background

The 60 MW Pomalaa power station began operating in 2016 and cost $145 million to construct.[1] The plant primarily supplies energy to the Pomalaa ferronickel plant, operated by Pt Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam). The coal-fired power plant operates alongside diesel power plants which supply an additional 100 MW to the ferronickel production process. The power generation facilities at the ferronickel plant provide excess power of 5 MW, which is then sold to the people of Kolaka Regency.[2]

In November 2023, Antam announced that they planned to stop using coal-fired energy generation. Their 2030-2060 plan instead included plans for a gas-fired power station equipped with carbon capture and storage.[3]
