Background

The original pipeline was retired in 2009.[3] However, after the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic seceded from Ukraine in 2014 and was annexed by Russia in 2022, the local authorities has proposed to revive the Soviet-era pipeline.[5] Satellite images from July 2024 show that Russia is possibly constructing the replacement line of the Taganrog-Mariupol segment.[6] Additionally, in an official document from 2025, the Donetsk People's Republic Ministry of Construction stated that the replacement of the Taganrog-Mariupol segment is underway, whereas the Mariupol-Berdyansk segment is in the proposal stage.[7]
