Background

In August 2024, Pilot LNG LLC and GFI (Gomez Family International), both based in Houston, Texas, announced a joint venture to develop an 0.34 mtpa fossil gas liquefaction and LNG export facility on Mexico's Pacific coast.[4] Known as Salina Cruz LNG, LLC, the joint venture aimed to supply LNG to North and Central American bunker, transportation and fuel-to-power markets.[5] Plans called for development of a land-based liquefaction facility and an FSU with 50,000 to 140,000 m3 of LNG storage capacity.[5][6] The company estimated that the project would be developed over a 36-month period. The permitting process was set to begin immediately, with an anticipated FID date in the second half of 2025 and a commissioning date of mid- to late 2027.[5][7]

As of September 2025, the owners' website offered no information more recent than the original August 2024 announcement[5], and there had been no further news about the project from other sources.

The new project was distinct from a previously planned, larger LNG export terminal in the Salina Cruz area sponsored by CFE.

As of August 2026, two years had passed since Pilot/GFI's original announcement, with no publicly available record of progress, aside from a pair of memos between the developers and two outside consultants (JR Engineering Company[8] and Pacific Andes Capital[9]). The project's original target date for an FID had passed, and the developer's website was no longer accessible[10], calling into question whether the project was actively moving forward.
