Background
The two existing coal-fired units of Gansu Huating power station, totaling 290 MW, were brought online between 2006 and 2007. [4]The plant is owned by Sinohydro, a subsidiary of PowerChina.
Description of Expansion
PowerChina is currently planning to build additional coal-fired units at this plant, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW.[5][5][6][7][8][9]
In the "13th 5-year Energy Development Plan In Gansu Province" issued in September 2017, the project is set as a back-up supporting coal power plant for the Eastern Gansu UHV transmission line.[10]
However, there have been no developments on the units since the project feasibility study in 2014, and plans appear to have been abandoned.
On February 7, 2025, the inquiry result announcement was released for the social stability risk assessment report preparation services for PowerChina Electric Power Investment Corporation Huating Company's 2×350MW 'replacing small-scale units with large-scale units' cogeneration project.[11] This project seems to be abandoned.
On January 5, 2026, PowerChina released a public inquiry and comparison procurement announcement for the feasibility study report review services for PowerChina (Huating) Power Generation Co., Ltd.'s 'replacing small-scale units with large-scale units' 2×660MW ultra-supercritical heating and peak-shaving coal-fired unit construction project.[12]
