Background
Taiheiyo Cement Corporation ("Pacific Ocean Cement Corporation") (太平洋セメント株式会社, Taiheiyō Semento Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese cement company, formed in 1998 with the merger of Chichibu Onoda (itself a merger of Chichibu Cement and Onoda Cement) and Nihon Cement (formerly Asano Cement).[2]
The operations at the plant was suspended during the Great East Japan Earthquake from March 2011 and resumed operates a year later in June 2012.[3] Taiheiyo and Erex started commercial operations of a 75 MW biomass power station at the Ofunato Plant in January 2020.[4][3]
In January 2024, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. received an order from Taiheiyo Cement Corporation for the replacement of an existing steam turbine generator at their Ofunato Plant. The new equipment will have an electric power generation output of 12.5 MW and will make use of waste heat from the firing stage of the cement production process. The project is scheduled to commence operations in October 2025.[5]
