Background

Tassie Shoal LNG Terminal was a proposed LNG terminal in Northern Territory, Australia.[3] It is owned by Melbana Energy (formally MEO Australia).

In 2016, Tassie Shoal LNG received environmental approval for the LNG facility and two methanol plants. The two methanol plants would have used four trillion cubic feet of raw gas over 25 years.[4]

Gas for the terminal would have come from the Barossa field, which is located 300 km northwest of Darwin and is scheduled to be developed by ConocoPhillips in 2023.[5] A June 2019 quarterly summary of activities by Melbana Energy stated that the project "remains a low-cost development option for LNG production should a means of disposing of the high CO2 content in Evans Shoal be economically achieved."[6]

As of May 2021, the project had not advanced in over four years and is presumed to be cancelled.

Natural Gas in Australia

As of 2017, Australia is the second largest LNG exporter after Qatar. The country exports almost 44 million tons a year. [7]
