Xinjiang Coal-to-Gas Pipeline Project also known as (新疆煤制气外输管道 (新粤浙煤制甲烷管道) is a coal-to-gas pipeline with segments that are operating and in construction in China.[1][2]

Location

The pipeline runs from the Xinjiang Autonomous Territory to Shaoguan, Guangdong, China. It has six branch lines, reaching out Guangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, and Shandong.[3]

Project Details

  • Operator: 中国石化新疆煤制天然气外输管道有限责任公司
  • Parent Company: Sinopec
  • Current Capacity: 30 billion cubic meters per year
  • Length: 8372 kilometers
  • Status: Construction
  • Start year: 2021

Background

The pipeline is included in China's 12th Five-Year Plan and the 13th Five-Year Plan.[1] It has one trunk line and five branches. It starts at Yining, Xinjiang and ends in Shaoguan, Guangdong, passing through 13 provinces in China. The total investment was estimated 159 billion yuan.[4] The source of the pipeline is the coal-to-gas facilities in Xinjiang, including 9 coal chemical plants which signed contracts with Sinopec to supply 40 billion cubic meters of coal-to-gas every year.[5] Sinopec was planning to develop additional 20 billion cubic meters of coal-to-gas to match the capacity of the pipeline.[4][6]

One source from April 2013 says the length of the pipeline is 7927 kilometers, including one trunk line (4859 kilometers) and four branches (3068 kilometers)[7]. Another source from 2021 says the pipeline includes one trunk line and six branches.[8]

The segment of Gansu entered preparing stage in 2014. No further news of it though.[9]

Sinopec expects to complete the Qianjiang-Shaoguan section by 2020.[10] In June 2020, part of the pipeline between Qianjiang, Hubei and Chenzhou, Hunan went into operation[11]. As of October 2021, the remainder continues to be under construction.

The changed Environmental Impact Assessment of Guangxi Branch was open for public review in April 2021.[8] The construction of Guangxi branch started in July 2021. [12]
