Background

The Sangha Systems Putnam County facility, called 82 River North, is an 82 MW cryptomining operation based out of a former steel mill in Hennepin, IL. [1] The facility went into operation in the fall of 2019. While it is currently powered by the local grid that mainly sources from non-renewables, Sangha Systems has plans to power the operation using solar power. [2] Recently, in partnership with AEP OnSite Partners, the company signed a letter of intent (LOI) to develop a behind-the-meter solar array with a capacity ranging from 2-5 MW to reduce reliance on the local grid. [3]

Sangha Systems may soon gain tax incentives for operating in the state of Illinois. A bill, extending tex benefits to cryptomining operations, is awaiting approval in the state legislature. Reportedly, a lobbyist of Sangha Systems was very influential in its development and drafting.[4]
