Background

The power station is one of the four Afam gas plants in Rivers State, which include Afam (FIPL) power station (360 MW), Afam V power station (276 MW), and Afam VI power station (650 MW ).Afam IV plant was commissioned in 1982, while the Afam V plant in 2002.[9] Afam IV power station and Afam V power station are both owned by Transcorp Power Limited and have a combined generation capacity of 726 MW.

In 2020, it was reported that Nigerian federal government and the Transcorp Power Consortium had signed a share sale and purchase agreement in relation to Afam Power Plc and Afam III Fast Power Limited, as part of the country's divestiture of power generation assets. Transcorp Power Consortium emerged the preferred bidder with an offer of N105 billion, following a competitive bidding process[10].
