Background

In April 2025, Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) and China TianChen Engineering Corporation (TCC) signed an EPC contract (turnkey construction contract) for an 80-MW waste-to-energy power plant that will run on ferroalloy gas from Smelting Shop No. 4 of the Aktobe Ferroalloy Plant, a branch of the multinational corporation Kazchrome (part of ERG). ERG will invest KZT 45 billion in the project. The project involves introducing the best available technologies for utilizing ferroalloy gas, which is currently flared in open stacks at a volume of over 600 million cubic meters annually. Instead, the gas will be used to generate electricity, providing the plant with its own energy source and reducing atmospheric emissions. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2026.[4] Public hearings on the project took place in June 2025.[5]
