Background

Approved in 2023, the Al-Faw Port FSRU will be "a fixed platform for processing imported gas" that will "help ensure a reliable electricity supply to Iraq."[3] As of November 2023, the Iraqi government had "allocated US$1.5 billion for the project, which is expected to be financed by public and private funds."[3] The platform was expected to be finished by 2026, but no detailed information had yet been disclosed regarding ownership and investments.[7]

In December 2024, it was shared that the Iraqi government had appointed South Gas Company to oversee a plan to install an FSRU at Grand Al-Faw port, which was under construction. KBR had been tapped to assist in the project. Later that month, Iraqi PM Al-Sudani released a statement after a US visit that discussed progress in attracting specialised US companies to establish a fixed gas platform at Grand Al-Faw port.[8] The port is due to be complete by the end of 2025.[9]

In February 2025, it was re-iterated that Iraq would be building two offshore LNG terminals to tackle shortages. It was confirmed that one of these would be at the Faw port, eyeing Qatar as a potential import source. The other project was shared to be the Khor Al-Zubair FSRU.[10]

In March 2025, it was confirmed that a tender had been launched for a fixed regasification platform in the Grand Al-Faw port.[6]
