Background

The Souk El-Khamis Cement Plant began production in 1977, with two dry production lines totalling 1 million tonnes per year in capacity. Since the beginning of the civil war in Libya in 2011, the plant has only reached half a million tonnes in actual annual production once, in 2015. A 2021 study found negative air pollution and noise pollution resulting from the plant, affecting the houses to the northwest.
