Ownership Tree

Background

The American Eagle mine (also known as Speed Mine; MSHA ID: 4605437) is an underground coal mine near the town of Dawes in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

In the early 2000s, the mine's then-owner, Appalachian Eagle Inc., rebranded itself as Speed Mining, Inc. This is why the mine is sometimes referred to as "Speed Mine."

In 2015, Panther Creek Mining, LLC, a subsidiary of Blackhawk Mining (acquired by Blackhawk through the bankruptcy proceedings of Patriot Coal), assumed operation of the mine. In June 2020, Sev.en Global Investments acquired 100% ownership of Blackhawk Mining.

Associated Coal Mine Methane Mitigation Projects

Some coal mines have installed infrastructure which can use and/or destroy some methane emissions associated with mining. In 2024, the Global Methane Initiative reported that this mine had a mitigation project associated with it.
