Mine Profiles

Three of the world's largest mines are in Indonesia; two in the USA; two in India; two in China; and one in Poland.

1. KPC Operation

KPC Operation in Indonesia is the world's largest coal mine complex based on actual production. The operation consists of adjoining mines--the Bengalon coal mine and Sangatta coal mine--operated by Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), a majority owned subsidiary of Bumi Resources, in East Kalimantan.[6]

2. North Antelope Rochelle Coal Mine

The North Antelope Rochelle Mine (NARM) is the world's second largest coal mine based on actual production. The surface mine is operated by Powder River Coal, a subsidiary of Peabody Energy, 65 miles south of Gillette, in Campbell County, Wyoming, United States. It is the largest mine in North America.

3. Black Thunder Coal Mine

The Black Thunder Coal Mine is the world's third largest coal mine based on actual production. The surface mine is operated by Thunder Basin Coal Company, a subsidiary of Arch Resources, near Wright, in Campbell County, Wyoming. It is the second largest mine in the United States and North America.

4. Kusmunda Coal Mine

The Kusmunda coal mine is the world's fourth largest coal mine based on actual production. The surface mine complex is operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, in Korba, Chhattisgarh, India. It is the largest mine in South Asia.

5. Gevra Coal Mine

The Gevra coal mine is the world's fifth largest coal mine based on actual production. The opencast mine complex is operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, Korba, Chhattisgarh, India. It is the second largest coal mine in India and South Asia.

6. Daliuta-Huojitu Mine

The Daliuta-Huojitu Mine (中国神华能源股份有限公司大柳塔煤矿活鸡兔井) is the sixth largest coal mine in the world. The underground mine is operated by China Shenhua Energy in Shaanxi, China. It is the largest underground coal mine in the world and the largest coal mine in East Asia.

7. Bełchatów Coal Mine

The Belchatow coal mine is the world's sixth largest coal mine based on actual production. The surface mine is owned by Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE), near the Belchatow power complex, in Bełchatów in Łódź Voivodeship, Poland. It is the largest coal mine in Europe.

8.Tutupan Coal Mine

The Tutupan coal mine is the world's seventh largest coal mine based on actual production. The surface mine is operated by Adaro Indonesia, a subsidiary of Adaro Group in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is the second largest coal mine in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

9. Pasir Coal Mine

The Pasir coal mine is the world's eighth largest coal mine based on actual production. The surface mine is owned and operated by Kideco Jaya Agung, a subsidiary of Indika Energy, in Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is the third largest coal mine in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

10. Heidaigou Surface Mine

The Shenhua Heidaigou Surface Mine (神华准格尔能源有限责任公司黑岱沟露天矿) is the tenth largest coal mine in the world. The surface mine is operated by Shenhua Junggar Energy in Inner Monogolia, China. It is the second largest coal mine in China.
