Background
The Bukit Asam (Persero) coal mines (PTBA) are a network of opencast and underground mines[9], operated by PT Bukit Asam (Persero), scattered throughout Indonesia, in the provinces of East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Riau, West Sumatra, and South Sumatra.[10]
The operating mines include Tanjung Enim coal mine, Ombilin coal mine, Peranap coal mine, Palaran coal mine, Tabalong coal mine, and Lahat coal mine.[11] PT Bukit Asam (Persero) operates the PTBA mines.
As of 31 December 2025, PTBA held nine Mining Business Licenses (IUP) for production operations, covering a total managed area of 65,632 hectares across five regions: Tanjung Enim and Muara Enim (South Sumatra), Samarinda (East Kalimantan), Indragiri Hulu/Peranap (Riau), and Sawahlunto/Ombilin (West Sumatra).[12] Total coal resources were reported at 5.71 billion tons, with coal reserves of 2.88 billion tons.[12] Individual IUP permit terms vary by site, ranging from the Banko Barat license (expiring April 2027) to Banko Tengah A and B (expiring September 2035) and Peranap (expiring June 2035); the Bukit Kendi IUP expired on 25 October 2025 and is in the mine-closure process.[12]
Total coal production across PTBA's Tanjung Enim mining site reached 47,188,606 tons in 2025, up from 41,999,196 tons in 2024 and 40,889,717 tons in 2023.[12] The company operates three coal ports/barging points — Tarahan (Lampung), Kertapati (South Sumatra), and Teluk Bayur (West Sumatra) — with the Tarahan port license valid through September 2027.[12] As of 31 December 2025, PTBA employed 1,759 personnel (permanent and contract combined), a decrease of 16 individuals (0.9%) from 1,775 employees in 2024.[12]
