Background
The Tutupan coal mine is an opencast mine, operated by Adaro Indonesia, a subsidiary of Adaro Group, with a capacity of 35.6 million tonnes-per-annum (MTPA) in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.[13]
The mine is adjacent to the Paringin coal mine and Wara coal mine, effectively operating as a single mine complex, producing 50 million tonnes per annum. Adaro Indonesia, a subsidiary of Adaro Group, operates the Tutupan mine.
As of 2022, Adaro Indonesia (AI) was 88.5%-owned by the Adaro Energy group; AI's mining license, a Special Mining Business License as a Continuation of Contract/Agreement Operations (IUPK-KOP), covers approximately 23,942 hectares in Tabalong and Balangan regencies and is valid until October 1, 2032.[14][15][16]
AI's mining operations began commercial production in 1992. Coal is a subbituminous thermal product with a medium calorific value of roughly 4,000–5,000 kcal/kg GAR, marketed under the trademark "Envirocoal" for its ultra-low ash and very low sulphur and nitrogen oxide content.[14] Mined coal is transported by mining-contractor fleets of more than 300 double-trailer trucks (130-tonne capacity each) along an 80-kilometer dedicated haul road connecting AI's mines to the Kelanis terminal on the Barito River, a dedicated facility with an annual processing capacity of 60 million tonnes where coal is processed and loaded onto barges.[16]
Production at Tutupan specifically was 39.8 million tonnes in 2022 (out of AI's total production of 49.1 million tonnes that year across all three pits), rising to 43.8 million tonnes in 2024 (out of AI's total of 50.8 million tonnes).[16][14] As of December 31, 2022, combined reserves for North and South Tutupan were reported at approximately 417.5 million tonnes (397.2 million tonnes proved and 20.3 million tonnes probable), with combined resources of roughly 1,632.7 million tonnes.[16] By December 2024, per a JORC-compliant estimate prepared by PT Quantus Consultants Indonesia, Tutupan's northern block held resources of approximately 1,108 million tonnes and reserves of around 333 million tonnes, while the southern block held resources of approximately 691 million tonnes.[15] AI's overall reserves across all its pits stood at 616.9 million tonnes and resources at 3.37 billion tonnes as of December 2024, up from 682.4 million tonnes of reserves and 3.2 billion tonnes of resources reported for 2022.[14][16]
