Background

The Sheikh Saeed Cement Plant opened in an Aleppo suburb in 1951, with three wet production lines. Those lines were eventually retired and replaced by two more modern dry production lines, which operated until the plant became the site of a 2016 battle in the Syrian Civil War.

In March 2026, the Arab Company for Cement and Building Materials announced that the cement grinding lines of the plant were again operating, and that the clinker kilns would be renovated and restarted with a capacity of just under 1 million tonnes annually.
