Background
In 1966, the foundation of Ashuganj Thermal Power Plant was laid. With the financial help of the then German government, work on the two units (Unit 1 & 2), having a generation capacity of 128 MW, was started.[7] In 1968, the installation of the main equipment was started and in April/July of 1970, the two units were commissioned.[7] In 1986, the first steam turbine unit came online. It is now retired.[12]In 1987, the second steam turbine came online. It is now retired.[12]After Bangladesh received its independence in 1971, the economic situation started to shift and gradually the demand of electricity began to rise. To meet the extra demand for electricity an expansion plan of Ashuganj Thermal Power Plant was planned, with three units having a generation capacity of 150 MW each From 1986 to 1989, the three units (Ashuganj 3, 4 & 5) were established with the financial help of IDA, KfW (German Government), Kuwait & OPEC fund and ADB.[7] From 1982 to 1986 for the first time in the Bangladesh a Combine Cycle Power Plant with a generation capacity of 146 MW was established with the British Government's financial support.[7] In 1988, the third steam turbine came online.[12]In 1989 the established generation capacity of the plant was as below:[7] 1. Unit-1 64 MW2. Unit-2 64 MW3. Unit-3 150 MW4. Unit-4 150 MW5. Unit-5 150 MW6. GT-1 56 MW7. GT-2 56 MW8. ST 34 MWFrom 1989 to 2010 no new plants were built in Ashuganj.[7]Till June 2000 the Ashuganj Thermal Power Plant was directed by Bangladesh Power Development Board. After the transformation to Company a new unit having a generation capacity of 53 MW was establish with the self fund of the company in 2011.[7]
