Background

Atlantic Sunrise Gas Pipeline is a pipeline expansion project. The design of the project includes a total of 183 miles of new greenfield pipe called the Central Penn Line, two pipeline loops (Chapman Loop and Unity Loop) totalling approximately 12 miles, 2.5 miles of existing pipeline replacement, two compressor facilities in Pennsylvania, and other facility additions or modifications in five states, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.[7][5]

Meade owns approximately 39.2% of the Central Penn Line and the rest owned by Transcontinental Gas Pipeline LLC. Meade Pipeline is a private joint venture between AltaGas Ltd's unit WGL Midstream, Cabot Oil & Gas Corp COG.N and EIF Vega Midstream. In September 2019, NextEra Energy Partners bought Meade Pipeline for approximately $1.37 billion.[8][9][10]

In May 2023, NextEra announced its plan to sell of its natural gas pipeline assets by 2025 to focus on a 100% renewable energy strategy.[11][12]

Williams partners submitted an application for the project to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in March of 2015, and the project was approved by FERC in February of 2017. Mainline construction began in March of 2017.[13] The project was developed in three phases: Phase IA, IB and II completing construction in 2017, June 2018 and October 2018.[3] The pipeline was expected to be in full service in mid-2018.[13]

In October 2018 the pipeline went into service.[14]

In September 2020, the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection fined Transco more than $73600 for failure to properly maintain erosion and sedimentation best management practices, drilling fluid spills at sites in Lebanon, Luzerne, and Wyoming counties, and sediment discharge into waterways.[15]
